THISTLEGORM
This is quite rightly, one of Dahab most popular safaris.
The thistlegorm was a
British WWII transport ship that was on its way to supply arms to the
Allied Forces in North Africa. Whilst at anchor, it was hit by a single
bomb dropped by a German Long-Range bomber based on Cyprus. The ship
was blown in two and sank instantly with the loss of seven lives. The
Thistlegorm now sits upright, at a maximum depth of thirty meters. The
stern which has blown off tilts at angle of around 45 degree.
Scatterd around the
wreck, lay many artefacts, including bren gun carriers, shell cases and
a locomotive. On the deck are more alocomotives, torpedos, and at the
rear there is an Anti Craft Gun, which makes for an excellent photo
opportunity. Inside the holds are BSA motorbikes, trucks and thousands
of rubber boots..
The wreck is a haven for
many very large fish, which use it to shelter from the strong currents
that often prevail in the area. Your first dive will be around the
outside of of the wreck, and the second dive will be inside the the
holds.
